creating customer glossaries (safeguarding corporate language)


The aim of this service is to provide our clients with the support needed to ensure the consistent use of their corporate English.

We enjoy long-lasting business relationships with many of our clients and as a result are aware that English texts are produced from a wide variety of sources within a company and under an immense range of circumstances. In order to help put an end to inconsistency, we recommend that our clients make use of our customer glossary service.

Three steps to linguistically consistent communication:

1. Text assessment:

In this step our terminologists analyse the quality of available material, assess existing translations (text quality, text types etc.) and gain an understanding of your written external communication. During an on-location consultation, together with you we determine what the current status is and define an objective. We examine and discuss terminological preferences and, using the information obtained, provide you with consultation on your corporate language. Once a joint decision has been reached, we advise you on the process for using and implementing the glossary. Then, together we decide on what the content of the glossary should be.

2. Producing your customer glossary:

After the on-location consultation, our terminologists use the agreed sources, such as the approved reference texts, existing working glossaries or approved wordlists, to produce your corporate glossary. The decision as to which terminology sources are used depends entirely on what we have agreed with you, the quality of the existing material and your own preferences.

Once this step has been completed we provide you with the customer glossary produced by us. Any remaining terminology questions are cleared up so that the glossary can then be used for all future work by your employees, service providers and partners, thus helping to define your corporate identity. By applying the glossary you can ensure that your corporate language is used consistently for all of your external communication. You will now have a qualitative reference source for your German and English word selection, slogans and statements, division and product names etc.

3. Text support:

As language itself is in a continuous state of flux and companies rarely stop moving either, you can never reach a point where changes to your glossary are no longer needed. Updates need to be recorded and communicated, and for this reason we provide our clients with support throughout the development of and changes to their corporate language, all the while taking the customer’s defined objectives into account. We carry out continuous glossary maintenance and can offer you the most current version at regular intervals, thus assuring that your glossary is always up-to-date. We can thus ensure that terminology changes which occur either within the company or are decided upon in collaboration with the customer are always recorded. Providing our clients with continuous consultation and support, both during and between projects, means that together we remain at the forefront.
